Introducing *PRINCETON*
Mar 10 '11

• Princeton is for a new generation that believes the office doesn't have to be 'the office'.
• It's more than just a new look, Princeton has a personality just like you.
• It's about making 'me' feel that I'm still me when I sit down for the day. You are never too young or too old to learn something new.
• Most desking products were conceived to build out from the wall (ie. the workwall) but Princeton builds out from 'you' and where you work.
• Makes sense when you think of it. And it does the wall thing too for those of us in transition.
• Princeton is about doing more with less space and less budget. How about a really great place to work in less than 50 square feet? And new ways of doing things like a bench that doubles as file storage. Rolling glass doors that reward the eye and the touch. And the tight product map is easy to spec, easy to reconfigure and easy to manage.

Office Furniture Terminology
Nov 03 '10

Some common terms used throughout the office furniture industry might sound like gibberish to most. So to help we have put together a list of common terms used to describe different components and systems available in our industry.

Casegoods:
The term "casegoods" is used when describing the pieces used to makeup an office suite. These items include; Desks, Credenzas, Hutches, Storage Cabinets, Pedestals, Laminate Filing Cabinets & Boardroom Tables.

Pedestals:
The term "pedestal" is used to describe a small laminate filing cabinet that is installed under a desk or credenza. A pedestal typically consists of two or three drawers. The two drawer configuration can consist of two filing drawers or one box drawer and one filing drawer. A box drawer is a smaller drawer vertically than a filing drawer (typically 5.5"H). The three drawer configurations consist of two box drawers and one filing drawer. These pedestals or "ped" for short are sized to accommodate letter size hanging folders front to back and legal size hanging folders from side to side.

Grommet:
A grommet is a small cover (plastic or metal) that is inserted into a pre-drilled hole in a desk, credenza, bridge or hutch for the purpose of running cables through for connections below the desks work surface.

Bridge:
A bridge is used to connect a desk to return or a credenza.

Pioneer of Occupational Ergonomics
Jan 06 '10

Frank Gilbreth (1868-1924) was a pioneer of motion study and occupational ergonomics. He became interested in motion study during his first job as a brick layer, where he noticed that unnecessary motions were primarily responsible for making the job tiring and back breaking.

Gilbreth and his wife (Lillian Gilbreth) later went on to study the motions of all kinds of workers, attempting to make their jobs easier. Unlike Frederick Taylor, whose motion studies were focused on efficiency and increasing corporate profits, the Gilbreths believed that all aspects of the workplace should be constantly questioned and improved upon for the benefit of the worker. Their emphasis on the "one best way" paved the way for the understanding that repeated motions can lead to workers experiencing repetitive motion injuries.

The Quest for the One Best Way

Besides discovering the best way to lay bricks, Gilbreth devised work methods that help save lives. For example, he proposed that a surgical nurse hand surgical instruments to the surgeon as called for. Gilbreth also developed standard techniques used by armies around the world to teach recruits how to rapidly disassemble and reassemble their weapons even when blindfolded or in total darkness.

Who made the first office chair?
Jun 25 '09

Charles Darwin

One the earliest known innovators to have created the modern office chair was naturalist Charles Darwin, who put wheels on the chair in his study so he could get to his specimens more quickly.

Cubicle History
Jun 25 '09

The preference for office cubicles draws from a rich history. As real estate prices rose and collars changed from blue to white at the turn of the century, economical office furniture was more important than ever. Office cubicles came to popularity in 1968, alongside the Civil Rights Act and Johnny Cash's "Live from Folsom Prison" album. Cubicles served as a bold antidote to the bay of secretaries and big, open office spaces common in this era.
